More than just a fire…

What do you do when you are running errands and smell the smoke of a fire, hear the sound of the sirens, see the fire trucks pass you, and realize the fire is just around the corner? Well if you are a multimedia journalist [for Deseret Media and you normally write heartfelt, mushy stuff articles – Alessandra Toscanelli – Deseret News] with a passion for firefighters and a cinematographer for a husband whose mother is retired Fire Battalion Chief for the City of Las Vegas, NV… You follow the engines as you grab your cameras and grin at each other as you approach the gathering of neighbors on the street.

One quick look around at the firefighting crew of the Pocatello Fire Department in action and this newbie reporter knew there is more to this story than just a fire. After interviewing the tenant of the basement apartment, Jake, who shared his story of being downstairs and hearing a neighbor pounding on the door after seeing smoke coming from the garage, I quickly began piecing the story together. Jake said his main concern, after being alerted, was to knock on the door of his neighbor to make sure she and her children were not home.  Jake said he was pretty sure the woman left approximately an hour prior to the fire department’s arrival shortly after 5 p.m. Jake says he just moved in and is a student at the College of Technology, ISU.

Several neighbors reported smelling the smoke and making the calls to 911. As the crowd stood watching the firefighters, one thing was very obvious; those surveying the panorama of fire trucks, hoses, and firefighters were clearly impressed with the response. As Animal Control moved nearby dogs away from the smoking garage, firefighters contained the blaze to the garage without losing any other nearby structures.

Subsequent to the extinguishing flames and residual smoke, my curiosity about the men and women on scene piqued my inquisitive nature more than the blaze.  I spoke with Ron Davies, the Battalion Fire Chief, and he shared how they work to assist families immediately during and after a fire. He shared his heartwarming thoughts about the local charities and donations drives which happen annually in the community. I thought of my childhood and how I watched my parents give of their time as they worked with the American Red Cross to feed firefighters and help families in Salt Lake City, Utah. I thought of my mother-in-law’s passion for her job and my father-in-law’s dedication to serving as volunteer firefighter. And I spoke with several more firefighters on scene to inquire what they love about their job… I was impressed to say the least!!!

As a result of a simple desire to investigate and to tell a story, my respect and admiration for the Pocatello Fire Department grew. In the next several days, I will be interviewing the Public Relations department to see how I can serve them in getting their message of fire prevention and fire safety out to the community. Look for more on this story as it develops and an interview with Tom Sanford, Assistant Chief for the Pocatello Fire Department.
